BBC moves to subpoena Trump family members in defamation case
Britain's BBC is seeking to compel testimony from Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner in a defamation lawsuit brought against it. The broadcaster says the three have relevant knowledge of President Trump's actions on Jan. 6, 2021.
The BBC has said it is seeking to subpoena three members of US President Donald Trump's inner circle — his son Donald Trump Jr., his daughter Ivanka Trump, and her husband Jared Kushner — as part of a defamation lawsuit filed against the broadcaster.
According to the BBC, all three are believed to have relevant knowledge about the president's actions on January 6, 2021, the day his supporters stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to block certification of Joe Biden's election victory.
The broadcaster's push for testimony suggests it intends to build its defense around detailed evidence concerning the events surrounding the Capitol attack and Trump's conduct during that period. The underlying lawsuit stems from claims that the BBC misrepresented Trump's actions or statements in one of its broadcasts.
It remains unclear whether and when Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Kushner might be compelled to testify, or how the Trump family and their legal team will respond to the subpoena request.
