Belgium Investigates Attack on Qatargate Investigator

Belgian prosecutors are investigating a serious attack on an investigator involved in the so-called 'Qatargate' case. Initial unofficial reports of the attack on an anti-corruption inspector were later confirmed by the Liège public prosecutor's office, which stated the incident is being investigated as an attempted murder. No suspects have been identified yet, and no evidence has been found linking the attack to the victim's professional activities.
The attack occurred in early June while the woman was walking through a field in rural Liège province. She was subjected to physical violence, including blows to the face, and has been unable to return to work due to her injuries. In 2024, another suspicious case was opened involving a person connected to the Qatargate investigation who was allegedly poisoned, but the investigation was closed due to lack of evidence.
Qatargate is a corruption scandal in the European Parliament that emerged in December 2022, when police raids in Brussels discovered €1.5 million in cash at the homes of Greek MEP Eva Kaili and former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri. They are accused of taking bribes to promote the interests of Qatar and Morocco. In early 2026, a Belgian court rejected arguments by the defendants seeking to halt the investigation.
