VLC, the widely used free and offline media player developed by the non-profit organization VideoLAN, has crossed the 7 billion download mark across all platforms. The news was shared in an email by Jean-Baptiste Kempf, VideoLAN's president and lead developer.

The new milestone arrives almost 18 months after VLC passed the 6 billion download mark back in January 2025.

New platform support and future plans

Kempf noted that VLC has recently been ported to Vega OS, Amazon's new operating system for televisions. The organization is also working on expanding support to additional platforms and codecs.

VideoLAN continues preparing its next major release, VLC 4, though development is taking longer than expected.

Last year, VideoLAN had teased plans for AI-powered translation and subtitles built on local models. It remains unclear whether those features have actually been released to users.
