Former NATO deputy commander in Ukraine: only Russia's defeat can end the war

A former high-ranking NATO official, who warned about Russia a decade ago, now serves inside Ukraine's military command and advocates for a strategy the alliance avoids: that only Russia's defeat will conclude the war.

A former deputy commander of NATO forces, whose name remains undisclosed, has taken up a role within Ukraine's military command structure. A decade ago, he warned publicly about Russia's aggressive intentions, warnings that were largely ignored at the time. Now, from his position inside Ukraine's defense establishment, he is pushing for a strategy that NATO as an alliance is reluctant to endorse: the complete military defeat of Russia as the only way to end the war.

This stance directly contradicts NATO's cautious official posture, which avoids framing the conflict in terms of victory over Russia. Sources in Ukrainian military circles indicate that the former senior NATO officer has become one of the key voices urging Western capitals to adopt a clearer and more decisive approach.

His presence in Ukraine's command chain underscores Kyiv's effort to integrate Western military expertise and thinking. At the same time, his outspoken views create tension with NATO's official line, which seeks to avoid escalation and maintain alliance unity. However, this case illustrates that even former NATO leaders believe that only a military victory over Russia can guarantee lasting peace in Europe.
