Braže in US discusses strategic partnership and NATO summit preparations

This week, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže (New Unity) traveled to the United States, where she held meetings in Michigan with US officials and representatives of the Latvian diaspora. The discussions centered on strengthening the strategic partnership between Latvia and the US, preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, and continued support for Ukraine.
During the visit, the minister met with US Senator Elissa Slotkin. They discussed enhancing transatlantic cooperation, the security situation in the Baltic region, and the role of the Baltic Security Initiative. Slotkin commended Latvia's defense spending, which stands at 5% of GDP, and reaffirmed the US Congress's strong support for Baltic security.
In a meeting with Michigan National Guard commander Major General Paul Rodgers, Braže highlighted the 30-year partnership between the Guard and the Latvian National Armed Forces. Both sides expressed satisfaction with joint military exercises and work on the Sēlija military polygon, and explored expanding cooperation in drone capabilities.
Braže also participated in events marking the 250th anniversary of US independence and the 16th Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Grand Rapids. During the festival, she met with leaders of the World Federation of Free Latvians, the American Latvian Association, and other diaspora organizations, emphasizing the diaspora's role in promoting Latvia's image and strengthening bilateral ties.
The Foreign Ministry noted that the minister also took part in events supporting the University of Latvia Foundation and the Occupation Museum Foundation, demonstrating support for the Latvian community in the US.
