Czech Republic Let Lead Slip, Draw 1-1 with South Africa
The Czech Republic drew 1-1 with South Africa in a World Cup group A match after conceding a penalty in the 83rd minute.

The Czech Republic football team played out a 1-1 draw with South Africa in a World Cup group A match on Thursday, squandering their lead late in the game. The Czechs took the lead in the 6th minute when Alexander Sojka, following a pass from Adam Hložek, set up Michal Sadílek, who slotted the ball into the right corner for his second international goal. In the second half, the Czechs had several chances to extend their lead, but shots from Patrik Schick and Vladimir Darid missed the target. In the 83rd minute, Pavel Šulc handled the ball in the penalty area, and American referee Tori Penso awarded a penalty. Teboho Mokoena converted the spot kick, sending the ball into the bottom left corner while Czech goalkeeper Matěj Kovář dived the wrong way, making it 1-1. South Africa were without two starting players – Yaya Sithole and Temba Zveina – who had been sent off in their first match. Tori Penso became the second woman in history to referee a World Cup match. In other Group A results, Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 and South Korea defeated the Czech Republic 2-1. Upcoming matches include Switzerland vs Bosnia, Canada vs Qatar, and Mexico vs South Korea. This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, co-hosted by Mexico, the USA, and Canada. The group stage ends on June 27, with knockout matches starting June 28.
