Employees of Czech public media launched a 24-hour strike on Monday, protesting the government's approved plan to change the funding model for public broadcasters. Dressed in black, workers formed a symbolic line in front of the radio station's headquarters to protect it. Some broadcasts were delayed by a minute, and online and social media services were limited during the protest. Organizers announced they are preparing further protest actions.

The government's plan, approved last week, would abolish the monthly fees paid by individuals, households, and companies for access to public radio and television. Instead, public media would rely entirely on state budget allocations. Critics argue this would threaten the independence of these broadcasters, as their funding would become subject to direct political influence.

The proposed plan also significantly reduces the current budgets of public media without providing any guarantees for future funding. Implementation would mean a 15% budget cut this year. Directors of public radio and television have stated that this would lead to hundreds of layoffs, as well as reduction or cancellation of programs.

Czechia has seen several large protests recently due to concerns about threats to media independence. This strike is another sign that media workers are ready to defend the autonomy of their institutions.
