Travel Insurance Often Excludes Canceled Concerts Abroad
Estonian travelers heading to a Pitbull concert in Riga faced losses because standard travel insurance doesn't cover events canceled by organizers. Experts recommend adding extra coverage.
Thousands of fans were left out of pocket after a Pitbull concert in Riga was called off at the last minute. The cancellation, due to technical issues, meant many had already booked non-refundable travel and accommodation. According to Latvian broadcaster LSM, 40,000 tickets had been sold for the show at Mežaparks Great Bandstand.
The incident has drawn attention to the limits of standard travel insurance. Tuuli Pärenson, chair of the Estonian Insurance Association (EKsL), notes that basic policies typically do not cover losses when an event is canceled by its organizer. "Travelers need to check for additional coverage," she says, adding that such protection is not available from every insurer.
In Estonia, LHV and BTA Insurance offer optional event cancellation coverage, either as a standalone add-on or as part of a broader trip disruption policy. However, not all companies provide it. At If P&C Insurance, head of personal claims Joonas Kušvid confirms that organizer-canceled events are not considered insured incidents. He says two customers in the Pitbull case have been in touch after rebooking other arrangements, but their claims do not fall under the policy.
Experts advise travelers to review their insurance terms before attending major events abroad and to consider whether the extra cost of event cancellation coverage is worthwhile.
