A four-year-old girl got into trouble at kindergarten. She is usually a wonderful child – kind, helpful, sincere, smart, and brave – but she had pinched a classmate. The teacher saw it and told the child to keep her hands to herself. At the end of the day, the teacher whispered the incident to the mother, asking her not to reveal that she knew, giving the child a chance to confess on her own. A few days later, the daughter indeed told her mother what happened. She wanted the chair where the classmate was sitting. When he refused to give it to her, she proposed a deal: either you give me the chair, or I pinch you. As we know, she did not get the chair.

Listening to her daughter's serious explanation (and trying to keep a straight face), the mother tried to figure out how to react. She considered three options: scold and punish, laugh and forget, or analyze and understand. This question is crucial because a parent's response can shape a child's self-esteem. However, the mother had not yet decided which path to take.

This story illustrates how important it is to be aware of how words and actions form a child's self-perception. Even when a child does something wrong, one must think about how to talk about it without damaging their self-confidence.
