Chinese carmaker Chery held an international event in late October in Wuhu, the city where the company was founded, for car owners and partners from various countries. It presented two new SUVs, the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo X7, along with a smart parking system and technologies that could be used beyond the auto industry. The event took place as Chinese manufacturers rapidly expand their share of the European market.

Chinese brands in Europe

According to preliminary Dataforce figures published by Automotive News Europe, sales by Chinese carmakers in Europe more than doubled in September this year, reaching a record 194,760 vehicles. Their market share rose to 14.6%. In September, Chery Group overtook BYD and MG for the first time to become the best-selling Chinese automaker in Europe. In the first nine months of the year, the group exported about 1.55 million vehicles, 65.6% more than a year earlier.

Chery was founded in 1997 and has operated in foreign markets since 2001. The company says it has more than 4.55 million customers and operates in over 130 countries and regions.

Two new models

The Tiggo 7 is intended for everyday family driving, mainly in cities. It is 4.6 metres long, has a 505-litre boot, and its front seats have massage, ventilation and heating functions. The manufacturer says more than 80% of the body structure is high-strength steel, and the car has more than 20 safety and driver-assistance functions.

The Tiggo X7 is the first model in the new Tiggo X family, with an angular design aimed at families who also drive off paved roads. Plug-in and self-charging hybrid versions will be available. It has six driving modes, ground clearance above 200 mm, can wade through 700 mm of water and tow a trailer weighing up to 1,500 kg. It is not yet known when and in which versions the models will reach the Baltic states.

Automated parking and other industries

The SIVP (Super Intelligent Valet Parking) system lets a car, in pre-mapped car parks, drive out to meet the driver or find a space on its own. The driver must supervise throughout. The system uses three radars, 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a lidar.

At an innovation conference, Chery also showed its own chips, the CheryMind artificial intelligence model, household humanoid robots and a level-4 autonomy robotaxi. The company plans to install 20,000 bidirectional (V2G) charging stations worldwide by 2029.
