How Long Should the New Apple TV Last? History Points to Eight to Ten Years
Apple does not promise a set period of tvOS updates for the new $299 Apple TV 4K. Earlier models received major software updates for eight to ten years.

Apple will release the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, a streaming box that connects to a television, on November 13. It costs $299 and features an A19 chip, an improved Siri Remote and hands-free Siri controls. For that price, buyers may wonder how long it will stay supported before an upgrade makes sense.
Apple has not guaranteed how many updates tvOS, the Apple TV operating system, will receive or how long the devices will be supported. Its track record offers a guide, though: older models received major software updates for eight to ten years, with security patches continuing beyond that.
The track record
The Apple TV HD, introduced in 2015, and the first Apple TV 4K, from 2017, were both updated to tvOS 26 in 2025. Security patches followed in tvOS 26.6 in July 2026. That amounts to about ten years of major updates for the HD and eight for the original 4K. The streak ended in September 2026 with tvOS 27, whose compatibility list begins with the second-generation Apple TV 4K from 2021, so the 2015 and 2017 models cannot install it. Apple has not confirmed whether those boxes will get further security patches.
By comparison, Amazon promises at least four years of security updates for Fire TV devices bought new directly from it, or until the model's published support date if that is later.
When to replace
Losing access to the newest tvOS does not make a device useless. Netflix still supports the Apple TV HD and first-generation Apple TV 4K. That could change if developers raise minimum software requirements, leaving older boxes unable to install or update certain apps.
A more useful test is performance rather than age: painfully slow menus, crashing apps or a service that stops working are signs an upgrade makes sense. Security matters too, particularly if the Apple TV serves as a smart home hub and no longer gets patches.
Apple's Siri AI beta will also come to the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer, provided the Home admin has an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. A lost remote can be replaced by using an iPhone, and the latest Siri Remote works with all Apple TV 4K models and the 2015 Apple TV HD. A replacement costs $59.
