Tech site Engadget has published a how-to guide on adding new apps to Samsung smart TVs and organizing them on the home screen. It may help owners who are not using all of their TV's features and may not realize that streaming services do not require a separate device, such as a streaming stick.

What comes pre-installed

Smart TVs give access to streaming services as well as self-hosted media servers such as Plex. Samsung TVs usually come with Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV already installed, though the list can vary by region. If only these popular services are needed, no extra steps may be required.

Installing a new app

To add another app, open the TV's home screen, use the remote to select the search bar at the top and type the name of the app. If it does not appear in the results, it may not be available in that region, or Samsung smart TVs may not support it at all. The guide notes that Samsung has publicly banned some smart TV apps. If the app is found, selecting its icon installs it.

For those without a specific app in mind, the TV's apps menu lists available options sorted by category.

Organizing the home screen

Once installation finishes, a button appears that adds the app to the home screen. If that moment has passed, users can press and hold the app in the apps menu, and an option to add it to the home screen will appear.

To change the order, select the app on the home screen and press and hold the select button until a menu opens. On older TV models, a different command may be needed to open the menu, such as pressing the down key. Then choose the move setting and slide the app left or right. The same menu also lets users remove an app from the home screen or delete it entirely.
