Ninth-graders average just 45% on natural sciences diagnostic test
Data compiled by the State Education Development Agency show that last year's ninth-grade natural sciences diagnostic test produced an average result of only 45%, with students performing better on knowledge-based tasks than on skills-based ones.

Information compiled by the State Education Development Agency (VIAA) on last year's natural sciences diagnostic test for ninth-graders shows that students achieved an average result of only 45% of the maximum possible score.
Diagnostic tests are assessments that students complete at certain stages of their education so that the education system can evaluate how well the knowledge and skills set out in the curriculum have been mastered. The natural sciences test includes tasks that check both theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in practice.
According to the information compiled by VIAA, students performed better on tasks that required demonstrating knowledge and understanding of natural science concepts and processes. Tasks that required applying practical skills, however, proved more difficult for students.
This gap between the level of theoretical knowledge and the level of practical skills may point to areas of the learning process that need additional attention - not only the mastery of facts and concepts, but also their practical application in real or simulated situations.
The results of diagnostic tests serve as one of the tools that allow educational institutions and policymakers to assess the effectiveness of the teaching process and, where necessary, adjust curriculum content or teaching methods. VIAA regularly compiles and publishes the results of such tests in order to track students' level of preparedness across different subjects and stages of education.
