Data breaches: how to check for free whether your email and passwords have fallen into the wrong hands

Personal data, including email addresses and passwords, can end up with fraudsters after breaches, even at large companies. Latvian news site Jauns.lv says people can check this themselves, free of charge and within minutes.

Internet users' email addresses, passwords and other private information can end up in the hands of fraudsters as a result of data breaches, the Latvian news portal Jauns.lv reports. It points out that such incidents also happen at large, seemingly trustworthy companies, on whose websites people routinely enter their details.

Safety does not depend on the user alone

The outlet notes that never having fallen for a scam does not mean a person's data is safe. Because breaches can hit companies that users trust, some people do not even suspect that their personal information is already in someone else's hands.

Checking is possible at no cost

According to Jauns.lv, anyone can find out for themselves whether their email address, passwords and other private information have appeared in data breaches. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing. Several simple tools are available for this purpose.

The available portion of the source does not name specific tools or give further advice, so none are listed here.
