The escalation of the Iran conflict has led to a sharp increase in fuel prices in Kenya, accelerating the shift toward electric transportation. Petrol prices have surged by more than 20%, prompting many residents to seek more cost-effective mobility options.

Couriers and other professional riders, who rely on motorcycles as their primary work vehicle, are particularly active in this transition. Traditional petrol-powered motorcycles have become more expensive to maintain, so electric models offer long-term savings despite potentially higher upfront costs.

Although exact sales figures for electric motorcycles are not available, observations indicate a clear trend. Lower charging costs compared to fuel purchases make electric bikes attractive also for environmental reasons, but the main driver is economic. In Kenya, motorcycles are a common mode of transport, especially in urban and suburban areas, where they serve as taxis or delivery vehicles.

This development aligns with global trends toward sustainable energy, but the immediate catalyst is the fuel price hike caused by the Iran conflict. The war has had direct consequences on the local market, accelerating changes that might otherwise have occurred much more slowly.
