Dermatologist: In Latvia, SPF Not Needed Daily – UV Index Matters
Although many believe sunscreen should be applied daily, a dermatologist explains that in Latvia it is unnecessary when the UV index is below 3.

Many people regularly use sunscreen during summer, but a dermatologist points out that in Latvia SPF is not mandatory every day. Dr. Raimonds Karls from “Derma Clinic Riga” explains that sun protection – both creams and clothing – is only necessary when the ultraviolet (UV) index reaches 3 or higher.
The UV index can be easily checked in weather forecasts or mobile apps. This allows a more precise assessment of whether additional protection is needed on a given day. For example, in Latvia from November to February, UV levels are usually zero, so special sun protection is not required during these months.
However, if the day is sunny, the UV index is high, or cloud cover is variable, protection becomes essential. The dermatologist emphasizes that the rule “SPF every day all year round” does not apply; instead, one should follow the current UV index.
