Angry fans in Seoul gathered to await the arrival of former South Korea men's national football team head coach Hong Myung-bo following the team's failure to reach the World Cup knockout rounds. Announcing his resignation at a press conference in Mexico on Sunday, Hong Myung-bo said that "we didn't deliver the results that our fans expected." The announcement came after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung expressed that he felt "not just confusion but utter bewilderment at the unexpected outcome." The president also called for an investigation into the reasons behind the team's performance. Seoul correspondent Jake Kwon explains how Hong went from being a star captain in 2002 to a shamed head coach in 2026.
