South Korea's national football team suffered a severe blow in the World Cup group stage, losing 0-1 to South Africa in a decisive Group A match. Despite dominating possession, the Koreans failed to score, allowing South Africa to sensationally advance to the knockout rounds.

After the match, a South Korean journalist posed a particularly sharp question to head coach Hong Myung-bo: "Coach, today's performance was very weak. The players looked extremely sluggish. Was there perhaps a mass food poisoning or some other factor beyond the team's control? Otherwise, it's hard to understand such a performance."

Hong acknowledged the poor performance but rejected any excuses. "Even if we had any problems, I wouldn't want to use them as an excuse. But this was definitely our worst match of the group stage." He took full responsibility: "Results at this level are the coach's responsibility. All those were my decisions and my choices. I assessed the situation and made wrong decisions, so the result was not good. Nothing more, nothing less."

In Group A, Mexico topped with nine points, while South Africa finished second with four points. South Korea, with three points (a 2-1 win over Czech Republic), placed third. The Czech Republic, with one point, finished fourth and exited the tournament. South Korea still has a chance to advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams from the 12 groups.

This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, hosted by Mexico, the USA, and Canada. The group stage ends on June 27, with the knockout stage starting June 28. The final is scheduled for July 19.
