DoorDash launches AI agent that lets users order food by text
DoorDash has launched an AI agent that allows users to order food through text messages in Apple Messages. The company is also beginning to test delivery drones with select restaurants in Northern California.
Delivery company DoorDash announced on Wednesday the launch of a new text-based AI agent that allows customers to place food orders by messaging through Apple Messages.
The system can interpret casual requests, such as a message saying "order my usual," recognizing that a customer means their regular Friday night order. According to DoorDash, users can also name a specific dish or ask the agent for a local recommendation.
How the agent works
Upon receiving a request, the AI agent searches nearby restaurants and puts together a suggested cart based on the prompt, even sending photos of the recommended food. When placing an order for a group, the agent can account for different dietary preferences and varying quantities within a single order.
With this new tool, DoorDash is aiming to gain an edge over rivals Uber Eats and Grubhub. The launch comes as more companies move toward adopting personal AI agents capable of completing tasks without requiring users to navigate apps or websites themselves.
DoorDash is currently opening a waitlist for U.S. users who want to try out the new feature.
Along with the AI agent launch, the company also announced it will begin testing its delivery drones with select restaurants in Northern California.
