Drones Are Not Wonder Weapons: Ukraine's Success Shouldn't Mislead Defense Priorities
Experts warn that over-reliance on drones could lead to underfunding of other critical weapons systems, benefiting only Russia.
Ukraine has effectively used drones to strike Russian military and civilian targets, including oil terminals and ships. However, experts caution that the success of drones should not create the illusion that they are the only weapon needed.
While drones have helped Ukraine push back the Russian Black Sea Fleet, they cannot fully control the sea as Ukraine lacks its own navy. Swedish Vice Admiral Eva Skoog Haslum emphasizes that drones are just one part of a military system – they can serve as sensors, weapon carriers, and logistics tools, but traditional weapons like frigates remain indispensable.
In Ukraine, a debate emerged between Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who championed extensive drone use, and Army Commander Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, who favored traditional warfare. Both were eventually dismissed.
The public narrative that drones are a cheap and effective solution pressures policymakers to cut funding for traditional armaments. Experts warn that this approach is dangerous and benefits only Russia. Technology is evolving rapidly, and effective countermeasures like laser weapons are likely to emerge. Therefore, a balanced investment in both new and traditional defense systems is necessary.
