Dyson lets journalists test its new tech-packed CameraJet toothbrush at IFA
At the IFA trade show, Dyson unveiled its first oral care device, the CameraJet — a toothbrush with a built-in camera and water flossing function. An Engadget reporter tried it on fake teeth, since live demos on real users weren't feasible at the show.
At IFA, held just outside Berlin, Dyson showcased what many attendees considered the standout product of its lineup: the CameraJet, a toothbrush combined with a water flosser. Alongside its usual array of robot vacuums, haircare tools and air purifiers, the company let media and industry visitors handle the new device, described as arguably the most complex toothbrush ever created.
The CameraJet allows users to switch between brushing and flossing modes, or run both simultaneously. Its "Gap Optical Targeting" system processes 28 images per second from a built-in camera to precisely direct water jets at the gumline and between teeth, using less water than typical flossers. Despite a notably small water tank, a demo on fake dentures allowed for at least two full passes without needing a refill.
As a toothbrush, the device feels somewhat unwieldy compared to existing models, but as a water flosser, it proved impressively portable. The flossing jets only activate when the system detects gaps between teeth, meaning water doesn't spray immediately upon powering on. During the demo, however, an accidental switch to manual jetting mode resulted in an unexpected spray to the face.
The device also includes a roughly 100,000-pixel camera that streams live video to a companion smartphone app. Despite the movement, vibration and water involved, the feed was described as surprisingly clear. Dyson has stated the video stream isn't processed anywhere beyond the user's phone, keeping it private. As is typical for Dyson, pricing is expected to sit a couple hundred dollars above premium competitors like Sonicare or Oral-B, with additional costs likely for proprietary replacement heads and toothpaste. The device will also include a travel mode to prevent accidental activation in luggage.
