Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has lodged an appeal against his conviction for rape and other sexual offences against two children. His solicitor, John McBurney, confirmed that documents were submitted to the Court of Appeal in Belfast on Friday. A jury at Newry Crown Court found the 63-year-old guilty last month of 18 offences committed more than 30 years ago, between 1985 and 2008, including one count of rape, gross indecency, and indecent assault. Donaldson denied all charges.

Donaldson is currently held at Maghaberry prison in his former constituency of Lagan Valley, County Down, awaiting sentencing in September. Trial judge Paul Ramsey indicated that a custodial sentence is inevitable and will be lengthy. The arrest in 2024, followed by a four-week trial and conviction, marked a dramatic downfall for a figure who had dominated unionism and played a key role in post-Brexit negotiations at Westminster over Northern Ireland's position in the UK.

Grounds for the appeal may include an unsuccessful attempt by Donaldson's lawyers to separate his criminal trial from the trial of the facts regarding his wife, Eleanor Donaldson. According to the BBC, the 60-year-old was deemed unfit to stand trial on mental health grounds and, in a trial of the facts, was found to have aided and abetted her husband's offending.

Since the verdict, senior DUP figures have publicly described Donaldson as a drunken sex pest during his long political career, contradicting his previous image as a God-fearing teetotaller in line with the late party founder Ian Paisley's legacy. The party has established a review led by former senior police officer Jim Gamble to determine what was known about the former leader's behavior. Additionally, the Stormont Assembly has launched a review into alleged abuse or inappropriate behavior by Donaldson during his tenure as an MLA from 2003 to 2010.
