Birth Rate Drops, Death Rate Rises: Latvia's Population Declines
In April 2026, Latvia recorded 885 births, 11.7% fewer than a year earlier, while deaths in the first four months reached 9,344, up 3.2%. The provisional population as of May 1 was 1.835 million.

According to the latest data from the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, 885 babies were born in Latvia in April 2026. This is a decrease of 117 or 11.7% compared to April 2025. Among the newborns, 441 were boys and 444 were girls.
Mortality figures, however, have increased. In the first four months of 2026, 9,344 deaths were registered, 293 or 3.2% more than in the same period last year (9,051 deaths). Consequently, the natural increase remains negative – deaths exceeded births by 5,702, compared to a difference of 5,223 in the first four months of 2025.
The number of marriages also declined. In the first four months of this year, 1,726 marriages were registered, which is 214 or 11% fewer than in the same period last year.
According to provisional data, Latvia's population stood at 1.835 million as of May 1, 2026.
