Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has said he would be ready to step back into the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in a sixth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. He made the comments in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, stressing that any return would need a clear purpose. The film has not been confirmed, and its production has been delayed for several years.

According to Depp, the only reason he would take part is the chance to give the franchise a better ending and close the story properly.

Trust in the producer

The actor said he still places great trust in film producer Jerry Bruckheimer, with whom he worked on all five previous films. Depp said he would work with him on any project, as the two share a deep friendship.

Bruckheimer has previously said he would gladly see Depp return. He called the actor a good friend and stressed that Depp created Jack Sparrow as audiences know him, since the character was not written that way in the script. According to the producer, Jeff Nathanson is writing the screenplay for the sixth film and has already come up with the ending, but the first two parts of the story still need work.

What happened so far

Depp first appeared as Sparrow in 2003 in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl". The last of his five films, "Dead Men Tell No Tales", came out in 2017.

Disney is weighing several future projects: a reboot of the franchise and a separate film starring actress Margot Robbie. Robbie said in 2022 that this project would most likely not go ahead, but Bruckheimer later said he still hopes both films will be made.

Depp's future in the series became uncertain after a conflict with his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard. In 2018, Heard published an article in The Washington Post about domestic violence. Depp's name was not mentioned in it, but the actor believed it had damaged his reputation and career, and widely covered litigation followed. Depp was no longer involved in developing the next film, although the studio never officially announced he had been dismissed.
