Josh Kerr smashes men's mile world record that stood since 1999
Scottish runner Josh Kerr broke the men's mile world record at the Diamond League meeting in London on Saturday, while Mondo Duplantis withdrew from pole vault due to injury.

In front of nearly 60,000 spectators at London Stadium, 28-year-old Josh Kerr of Scotland set a new world record in the men's mile on Saturday, clocking 3 minutes 42.66 seconds. He surpassed the previous mark of 3:43.13 set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome in 1999. Kerr, a two-time world indoor 3,000m champion, was perfectly paced by training partner Brannon Kidder and Slovenia's Zan Rudolf.
Elsewhere, St Lucia's Julien Alfred extended her unbeaten sprint streak by winning the 200m in 21.66 seconds, bettering her own meet record from 2025. American Gabby Thomas was second in 21.81.
In pole vault, Sweden's Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis withdrew from the competition due to a thigh issue after clearing 5.60m and failing once at 5.85m before passing. He cleared 5.95m along with American Sam Kendricks, Australia's Kurtis Marschall and Greece's Emmanouil Karalis. When the bar went to 6.04m, Duplantis pulled out. Kendricks, who won his first world title at London Stadium in 2017, won on countback.
Norway's Karsten Warholm, the 400m hurdles world record holder, won the 400m hurdles in a world-leading 46.61 seconds. American Ja'Kobe Tharp set a meet record in the 110m hurdles (12.89), while Cierra Jackson broke the Diamond League record in shot put with 71.72m on her final attempt.
