European Union countries have significantly increased their purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year, reaching record levels. This surge comes as the EU is set to introduce a complete ban on Russian LNG imports.
Russia's Yamal LNG project, located in the Arctic, is heavily dependent on Europe. The project's operations rely on a small fleet of specialized Arc7 ice-class LNG tankers that transport the gas.
These tankers still depend on European ship repair companies, including the French company Damen's shipyard in Brest and the Danish company Fayard. Europe's readiness to accept cargoes from Yamal LNG is crucial for the future of this Arctic project.
