EU Funds for Sturgeon Farm in Krāslava Municipality End in Criminal Case and Asset Seizure
An EU-funded investment of more than half a million euros in modernising a sturgeon caviar facility in Latvia's Krāslava municipality has ended in a court case and asset confiscation. Half a million euros has been recovered for the state, Latvian Television reports.
European Union funding of more than half a million euros, intended to modernise a sturgeon caviar production facility in Krāslava municipality, eastern Latvia, has ended in a court case. The proceedings led to the confiscation of property and the recovery of half a million euros for the state, according to Latvian Television (LTV), the public broadcaster.
How the public money was obtained
LTV reports that an entrepreneur from Azerbaijan, together with a female consultant, used fictitious procurements and companies he owned in order to obtain public funding for the sturgeon farm.
What happened to the company
Instead of the successful business that was planned, the company became insolvent. The building of the facility must now be guarded using state funds, so the state continues to bear costs.
The LTV report examines the whole case, from the allocation of EU money to the criminal proceedings and the confiscation of assets.
