The 2027 final of European Car of the Year (COTY), an award in which journalists choose the best new car on the European market, will for the first time in 63 years feature only fully electric vehicles. The line-up reflects the growing role of electric cars in European car making.

Seven finalists

The contenders are the BMW iX3, Cupra Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo, Hyundai Ioniq 3, Kia EV2, the new-generation Renault Twingo and the Volvo EX60. The list includes compact city cars and mid-size crossovers, and premium models appear alongside mass-market ones.

Several well-known manufacturers did not make the final, among them Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Porsche and Zeekr.

What comes next

The finalists' concluding tests will take place in Spain in late November. The COTY 2027 winner will be announced on 8 January during the Brussels Motor Show.

Last year's winner was the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which finished ahead of the Škoda Elroq and Kia EV4.

A total of 38 candidates were entered for the 2027 award. They included the Audi A2 e-tron, BYD Dolphin G, Polestar 5, Škoda Epiq and Škoda Peaq, Renault Clio, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, as well as several models from Mercedes-Benz, Kia, MG and Leapmotor. The finalist line-up points to rising popularity of electric cars and demand for more compact models.
