European Commission fines AliExpress €550 million
The European Commission has fined AliExpress €550 million for failing to prevent the sale of counterfeit goods and for products not meeting EU safety standards. This is the largest fine under the Digital Services Act to date.
The European Commission (EC) has imposed a €550 million fine on the Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress. This is the highest penalty ever applied under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA).
The investigation, launched in March 2024, revealed that some products sold on the platform do not meet the EU's strict environmental and safety standards. The EC also stated that AliExpress has not done enough to stop the sale of counterfeit goods. Even when the platform detected illegal products, many remained available for several weeks.
In determining the fine amount, the EC considered the nature, impact on European consumers, and duration of the infringements. AliExpress is the largest Chinese e-commerce platform in the EU, with 193 million users. This fine sends a strong message that digital platforms must comply with EU rules, particularly regarding consumer safety and the fight against counterfeits.
