Screen-Free Wearables Are Gaining Ground as Users Seek Less Distraction
A wave of screen-free health wearables — from Whoop to the new Fitbit Air — is gaining traction by promising to track wellness data without demanding constant attention. The trend is partly driven by fatigue with notification-heavy tech and AI's dual role as both a subscription upsell and a source of digital overload.

A growing number of wearable devices deliberately skip screens altogether, collecting health data around the clock while requiring only occasional check-ins through a companion app. Devices in this category include the Garmin Cirqa, Google Fitbit Air, Polar Loop, Amazfit Helio Strap, and the Whoop lineup, which pioneered the approach. Apple is reportedly considering its own version as well.
The concept echoes earlier wearables like the 2011 Fitbit Ultra, which required minimal daily interaction. Since then, most fitness trackers evolved into smartwatch-like devices with OLED screens, constant notifications, and even AI assistant integration—despite little evidence that these additions have delivered the transformative features once promised.
AI's Two-Sided Role
Artificial intelligence plays a contradictory role in this shift. Companies like Google use AI as a premium upsell: without a paid subscription, apps like Fitbit's offer only basic stats, while deeper explanations of health metrics require a monthly fee. At the same time, researchers point to AI and digital tools broadly as contributors to "technostress"—a sense of overload driven by rising digital demands in daily life.
Elizabeth Marsh, a doctoral researcher at the University of Nottingham studying the digital workplace, notes that digital tools consistently trigger information overload, constant interruption, and blurred boundaries between work and home life. Her research found that notifications can leave people feeling anxious or resentful, while simply disabling them isn't a full solution, since people fear missing something important.
Screen-free wearables offer a middle ground—users can still access sleep and step data without it being pushed at them throughout the day. Marsh recommends a practice she calls "digital mindfulness," built around intention, attention, and a forgiving attitude toward one's own tech habits, rather than fully automatic device use.
