Deadly summer in Europe: heat claims thousands of lives; 2026 could be worse

This summer, Europe has experienced several severe heat waves that have already claimed thousands of lives. According to recent data, heat-related deaths in the United Kingdom have reached approximately 2,877, while in Germany the estimated toll is around 9,800.

Europe is considered the fastest-warming continent on Earth. This season, multiple consecutive heat waves have not only fueled devastating wildfires in France, Spain, and Greece but also placed significant strain on healthcare systems.

The UK Health Security Agency warns that 2026 could become the deadliest year yet, with a record number of people dying from heat-related causes. The elderly and those with chronic heart, respiratory, and other conditions are particularly vulnerable.

Researchers emphasize that due to climate change, heat waves are becoming longer, more frequent, and more intense. As a result, greater attention must be paid not only to wildfire prevention but also to protecting populations from extreme temperatures.
