At Unreal Fest this week, Epic Games revealed how it plans to incorporate generative AI into its Unreal Engine. The company shared first details on Unreal Engine 6 (UE6) and released Unreal Engine 5.8, which includes an experimental Model Context Protocol (MCP) plugin. This plugin allows developers to hook generative AI models such as Claude and Gemini into the engine. Epic intends to make MCP a core part of UE6.

Marcus Wassmer, head of Epic's development team, wrote in a blog post that AI models can serve as "creativity and productivity multipliers," enabling teams to focus on essential creative and technical tasks rather than time-consuming manual work. The goal for UE6 is to greatly reduce tedious content authoring, leaving more time for creative exploration and iterative polishing.

During a demonstration, Epic showed Claude Code connecting to Unreal Engine, pulling objects from an asset library and placing them in a virtual living room—assets that developers could still manually adjust. Another demo illustrated how a developer could use Claude to build a city that automatically adapts when assets like parks are added. AI models can also modify assets, adjust lighting, and match atmospheric conditions to real-world examples.

Epic confirmed that UE6 will merge Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN (Unreal Engine for Fortnite) into a single platform. The company is also testing the ability to pull Fortnite skins into other UE6 games and let developers send their skins in the other direction. UE6 is expected in early access in late 2027, with a full release 12 to 18 months later.

According to the Game Developers Conference's 2026 State of the Game Industry report, 36% of game industry workers use generative AI tools, mostly for research and brainstorming (81%) and prototyping (35%). However, 52% believe generative AI is bad for the industry—up from 30% in 2025 and 18% in 2024. Only 7% said it has a positive impact.

Epic also announced new collaborations: Fortnite experiences made with UEFN will soon allow games based on The Simpsons, similar to existing Star Wars IP. Over 30 gaming collaborations are lined up for Fortnite this year, including Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Vampire Survivors. However, Vampire Survivors developer Poncle expressed concerns about Epic's AI use, stating on Reddit that they are reviewing their collaboration with Fortnite.
