Erotic Asphyxiation: Passion or Deadly Game?

In sexual practices, the act of choking a partner during moments of passion is known as erotic asphyxiation. While some view it as a way to heighten intimacy, experts warn against it.
Māris Taube, president of the Latvian Psychiatrists Association, professor at RSU, and head of the Veldre clinic, categorizes this behavior as a paraphilia—a group of sexual disorders. He explains the term's Greek roots: "philia" means love, and "para" means incorrect, inappropriate, or non-standard. Thus, paraphilia denotes atypical sexual interest.
No doctor recommends erotic asphyxiation due to serious health risks, including brain damage or death. Although not new, this practice has gained more attention recently through media and popular culture.
Experts urge caution and thorough consideration before attempting such techniques. Open communication and mutual consent are essential, but the risk remains even with them.
