Erotic asphyxiation, or strangling during sex, is considered a type of sexual disorder by psychiatrist Māris Taube, head of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Rīga Stradiņš University. He categorizes it as a paraphilia, which in psychiatry falls under sexual disorders. The term 'paraphilia' comes from Greek 'para' (incorrect, non-standard) and 'philia' (love). Medical professionals do not recommend engaging in erotic asphyxiation due to its inherent risks.
