EU Natural Gas Prices Pass €100 per Megawatt Hour for First Time Since 2022

The price of natural gas in Europe has climbed above €100 per megawatt hour as winter approaches, its highest level since 2022, when energy markets were badly shaken. The figure was reported on 28 October by the business programme of the French broadcaster France 24.

Storage 72% full

European Union officials say they are not worried about gas supplies, even though the bloc's storage facilities are only 72% full. At the same time, the EU is cautioning households to prepare for a "difficult" season ahead.

Other items in the programme

The same programme also covered efforts by the UK government to cushion the impact of high energy bills on the public.

It further reported that 200 passengers are stranded in Cambodia after their multi-year cruise was cancelled because of high fuel costs. The source does not say how the situation will be resolved.

The rise in gas prices matters for households and businesses because natural gas is widely used in Europe for heating and power generation. With prices back at a level last seen in 2022, winter energy costs could be noticeably higher than in recent years, although the source gives no precise forecasts.
