The talks are scheduled for June 29 in Brussels and are part of the EU's efforts to address the growing trade imbalance with China. Last year, the EU's goods trade deficit with China reached approximately €360 billion, meaning the bloc imported far more from China than it exported.
EU leaders agreed last week on a dual approach: engaging Beijing in dialogue while simultaneously developing stronger tools to tackle the influx of Chinese exports. The European Commission is working on an instrument to ensure solidarity among member states and promote fair trade practices, but details have not been disclosed.
A European diplomat told AFP that all EU leaders except Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez support a tougher stance toward China.
