Formula 1 has announced it is on track to achieve its commitment to become net-zero carbon by 2030. The sport's annual review for the 2025 season found a 35% reduction in its carbon footprint compared to the 2018 baseline, with a 12% decrease since 2024. Total carbon dioxide emissions fell from 228,793 tonnes in 2018 to 148,805 tonnes in 2025. These figures include emissions from F1's own operations, as well as factories, operations and travel of all teams.

Key drivers behind the reduction include shifting from air to sea freight, investment in sustainable aviation fuel, and revisions to the race schedule. Emissions from factories and facilities dropped 64% against 2018 levels and 14% year-on-year. Logistics emissions are down 21% year-on-year and 29% since 2018.

One example of F1's efforts is the geographic grouping of the calendar. The decision to run the Miami and Canadian Grands Prix consecutively this year — rather than with a European round in between — cut logistics and travel carbon emissions by almost 3%. Similar reshuffles include moving the Japanese Grand Prix from autumn to spring, allowing it to be grouped with the Australian and Chinese races.

From 2026, F1 will mandate the use of advanced sustainable fuels in races, which deliver an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to a fossil-fuel comparator. However, competition-related emissions represent a very small percentage of the total.

F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali said the results were made possible by collective effort across the sport to reduce environmental impact. Ellen Jones, F1's head of environmental, social and governance, stated that sustainable operations are achievable at a global scale without compromising performance, ambition or spectacle.
