Fauci to Face Senate Republicans Over Covid-19 Origin Questions

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who served as the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and advised seven U.S. presidents, will appear today before a Senate hearing chaired by Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky. Republicans are demanding answers about the origins of the Covid-19 virus, focusing particularly on the theory that the virus may have leaked from a laboratory.

More than 150 infectious disease experts and scientists have signed an open letter defending Fauci. They state that accusations—including claims that Fauci covered up the pandemic's origins, bribed colleagues, or that NIAID-funded research sparked the pandemic—are baseless. "No credible evidence has been produced to support these absurd charges," the letter says, also noting that Fauci and his family have suffered harassment and threats of violence for five years.

Although virologists consider the lab leak theory unlikely, it has gained significant traction among Republicans. For instance, in April 2025, the White House published a treatise justifying cuts to National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding.

The hearing comes amid several other political developments in the U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and delivered a eulogy at Senator Lindsey Graham's funeral. The Senate confirmed Jay Clayton as director of national intelligence, despite his lack of intelligence experience. The Senate also voted 86-12 to advance the "Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act." Democrats said they would work to limit the broad tariff authority the bill would give Trump. Zelenskyy stated that Trump again agreed to allow Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot air defense interceptors.
