FBI raid on Ohio voting rights group office raises concerns of intimidation before midterm elections
FBI agents raided an Ohio voter registration organization on Thursday, prompting allegations of politically motivated investigation ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

FBI agents raided the Cleveland office of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a grassroots group focused on voter registration, on Thursday. According to board member Prentiss Haney, agents seized computers and phones, and also visited homes of individuals affiliated with the group across the state, conducting interviews.
Haney described the raid as a coordinated assault weaponizing the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security against people fighting for working-class and Black voters' access to the ballot. He said the agents appeared to be examining fraud allegations related to the 2024 election, but specific details of the investigation remain unclear. The FBI's Cleveland office did not respond to requests for comment.
The raid comes amid heightened focus on voter fraud by the Trump administration. About a month ago, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche instructed prosecutors to prioritize such cases. Last fall, Ohio's top election official Frank LaRose referred 1,084 non-citizens who appeared to have registered to the Justice Department. In April, Reuters reported that federal investigators had collected voter records in at least six Ohio counties.
The raid drew immediate condemnation from elected officials and civil rights organizations. Rep. Shontel Brown, a Democrat whose district includes Cleveland, called it an unprecedented attack on democracy and demanded an end to such raids. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is running for reelection this year, said the reports were deeply disturbing. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb urged the FBI to disclose the basis for the raid, stating that the public has the right to know whether civic participation is being unfairly targeted.
Rep. Shontel Brown characterized the action as part of a systematic effort by Trump and the FBI to attack elections and perpetuate myths of voter fraud in order to undermine any result Trump does not accept. Michael Waldman, president of the Brennan Center for Justice, called the raid an outrageous fishing expedition and an attempt to intimidate people working for democracy, noting it fits a pattern of federal inquiries targeting voting infrastructure ahead of midterm elections.
