A one-of-a-kind demonstration unit of Ferrari's first fully electric model, known as the Luce, has been sold at auction for $40 million. The vehicle, designated Chassis 0, has become one of the most expensive new cars ever sold at auction.

A unique preview of Ferrari's electric future

Chassis 0 is not a standard production car. It belongs to the so-called zero series — vehicles built before a model reaches its first customers. This particular example was created to showcase Ferrari's electric future and serve as a demonstration model for the brand's move into electric vehicles.

Although the car's design drew considerable criticism for its appearance, this did not stop it from becoming a highly sought-after item among collectors. Its uniqueness and status as the very first example of its kind have turned it into a significant piece of Ferrari history.

Record price and the buyer

The car was purchased for $40 million by billionaire Herbie Wertheim, who outbid other interested buyers at the auction. The sale took place during the annual Car Week event in Monterey, one of the world's most prominent gatherings for luxury and collector car auctions.

The record price and the identity of the buyer have made the sale a widely discussed event among Ferrari collectors, showing that rarity and historical significance can outweigh even a controversial design.
