Figma Adds Code Layers, Animation Support, and New AI Features in Latest Update
Figma's new update introduces code layers, native animation and 3D transform support, as well as AI tools for creating custom plugins and workflows.

Figma on Wednesday unveiled a major update that brings code layers, motion and shader support, and expanded AI capabilities. The code layer feature allows teams to clone repositories and extract flows from code directly into design layers for testing. Chief product officer Yuhki Yamashita explained that code layers enable designers, product managers, and engineers to iterate rapidly without worrying about production-level code quality, leveraging the collaborative canvas for spatial exploration.
The update also adds native support for animations, transitions, and 3D transforms. Previously, designers had to create animations in external software and convert them to Figma-compatible code. Now they can integrate these effects directly into the platform. AI can assist in generating assets, including shader effects and fills.
Figma acquired the node-based tool Weavy last year and is now working to integrate it more deeply. Later this year, users will be able to generate Weavy workflows directly within Figma. The AI assistant has also been enhanced: users can write text prompts to create repeatable skills for AI agents, connect tools like Notion, Granola, Excel, and GitHub, or attach files for additional context. Additionally, a new feature allows users to create custom plugins—such as layout generators or vector path tracers—using simple prompts.
