Prime Video has launched a new series titled 'Elle', serving as a prequel to the 2001 film Legally Blonde. Set in the 1990s, the show follows Elle Woods as a high school student, long before her Harvard Law School days. The titular role is played by relatively unknown actress Lexi Minetree.

The story begins with Elle's sweet sixteen birthday party, where she is confident and has her life planned out. However, things take a turn when her father botches a high-profile nose job and the family relocates to Seattle. Elle, used to California sunshine and pink attire, finds herself in a gray, rainy city where she must navigate new social dynamics.

The series was developed with input from Reese Witherspoon, who played Elle in the original film. Witherspoon felt that “the world could use a little Elle Woods” – her determination and positivity. Creator Laura Kittrell drew inspiration from teen classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Mean Girls.

Executive producer Caroline Dries describes the series as a “love letter to the next generation” of girls, aiming to remind viewers of the importance of joy and self-confidence. “How great would it be if we could all go back and say [to our teenage self] ‘it’s going to be OK. Have more joy here. Believe in yourself’?” she said.

'Elle' is now streaming on Prime Video.
