The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified loneliness and social isolation as a serious public health problem. According to research, loneliness is linked to 871,000 premature deaths annually worldwide, equivalent to about 100 deaths per hour. In terms of health damage, loneliness is compared to smoking 15 cigarettes per day.

Philosopher and psychologist Vents Sīlis noted in an interview that the loneliness problem has been growing since the 19th century and has now reached a point where simple solutions are exhausted. He emphasizes that Latvians as a nation are more at risk of loneliness. Sīlis distinguishes between two concepts: "loneliness" (destructive) and "solitude" (potentially creative and leading to growth).

Modern society pressures individuals to appear successful and socially in demand, which contributes to burnout. Sīlis points out that people often do not admit to loneliness because it sounds like admitting defeat. He also links freedom with a sense of isolation – freedom means autonomy, which can lead to alienation. The meaning-making function of religion has been lost due to secularization, leaving people without clear guidelines.

Vents Sīlis urges everyone to go through the school of loneliness and solitude. People must learn to be with themselves, accept their shadow side, and build authentic relationships. Without this process, personal growth is impossible.
