Massive Blaze Hits Iconic Forest
Since Sunday, a wildfire has been raging in the famed Fontainebleau forest southeast of Paris, devastating about 2,050 hectares. Roughly 1,000 people have been evacuated, and 850 firefighters, supported by water-bomber planes and helicopters, are working to contain the flames. Officials hope to bring the fire under control by Tuesday, though efforts are hampered by heat, wind, and dry conditions.
The fire is believed to have been deliberately set. Two people have been arrested on arson charges, including an 18-year-old with no prior criminal record. This is the third major heatwave to hit France in under two months.

Antonia Mehnert, who moved from Germany to the Fontainebleau area four years ago, recalled: "At first, we didn't know what was happening. My husband was in the garden and smelled smoke. He went up to the attic and saw a huge fire on the horizon." Her husband's parents live in Vaudoué, a village near one of the fire's epicenters, but they were away. He rushed to their home and grabbed photo albums and his father's accordion. The family is staying indoors due to smoke.
Apolline, a 40-year-old sports instructor from Bourron-Marlotte, said she was "practically born in the forest." She described the devastated areas as "some of the most majestic with truly sublime views," adding: "The forest will never be the same again." Her 10-year-old daughter Flore told a reporter: "Tell the person on the phone that my heart is on fire."
Hugues, a consultant living in Milly-la-Forêt, moved to the area five years ago so his children could grow up close to nature. He hosted evacuees from Noisy-sur-École. "Fontainebleau is not only a source of beauty and freshness; it is a playground. Now I don't know what the future holds," he said.
The Fontainebleau forest attracts 15 to 18 million visitors annually and is a popular destination for hikers and climbers worldwide.
