In 2025, Ford experienced its largest ever vehicle recall, prompting a rethink of its decision to replace human workers with artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg, the automaker had previously laid off about 350 experienced engineers, hoping that AI would handle quality control. However, the AI failed to match the practical knowledge and expertise of seasoned professionals.

As a result, Ford has rehired approximately 350 engineers, including former employees. Their role is not only to enhance quality control but also to train younger colleagues and refine the AI systems so that future defect detection becomes more accurate. The company acknowledges that it relied too heavily on technology and underestimated the value of human experience.

Ford continues to use about 900 AI-equipped cameras in quality inspections, and initial results show improvements. However, management still believes that AI will replace some office jobs in the future. But this case demonstrates that human knowledge and experience remain irreplaceable.
