Fortnite Welcomes Kingdom Hearts: Major v42.20 Update Brings Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas

Epic Games released a new Fortnite update, v42.20, on Thursday, September 17 — described as one of the biggest patches of Chapter 7 Season 4. Server downtime began around 4 AM PT (roughly 7 AM ET), and according to the Times of India, downtime lasted approximately two to three hours depending on region.

The Kingdom Hearts crossover

The headline addition is a collaboration with the Kingdom Hearts series, bringing characters Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas into the game, styled after their Kingdom Hearts II designs. As WDW News Today reports, all four characters are shown wielding their own Keyblade in the reveal trailer, which could potentially be sold as a pickaxe — Sora's version appears to let him run faster and deal extra damage to opponents, suggesting a possible Mythic weapon. Game Informer notes that Epic has not revealed pricing for the skins or whether they come bundled with additional accessories.

Other crossovers and additions

According to the Times of India and VICE, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners crossover featuring Lucy is expected to land alongside Kingdom Hearts, bringing the Monowire item and a themed backpack. VICE also reports a possible PAC-MAN collaboration (expected September 18), Icon Series content tied to streamer Ironmouse, and Persona-related content, though release dates for the latter have not been confirmed.

The update also refreshes the game's loot pool. VICE reports that the Deadeye Assault Rifle is being removed from Loot Hacks, replaced by weapons including the Hyperburst Pistol, Mammoth Pistol, Reaper Sniper Rifle, Deadeye DMR and the FlowBerry Fizz Rocket Ram. New Lobby Hack codes tied to the crossovers, as well as new Sprite variants, are also expected, though these details come from dataminers rather than official Epic Games confirmation.

What else may be coming

VICE reports the update could include early hints of Fortnite's ninth birthday celebration and the Fortnitemares 2026 Halloween event, though Epic has not officially confirmed either. A Sora Cup competition is also scheduled for September 18, giving players a chance to earn the Sora skin.
