In sweltering 37°C heat, both teams played cautiously in the first half. France enjoyed territorial dominance, but Paraguay defended disciplinedly, preventing the two-time world champions from creating clear-cut chances. The only notable event before the break was a yellow card for Bradley Barcola in the 19th minute for a harsh foul.

After halftime, France increased the pressure. In the 54th minute, Manu Koné's long-range effort nearly found the net, but Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gil made a save. The decisive moment came in the 65th minute when Désiré Doué went down in the box after contact with a defender. The referee initially waved play on, but after a VAR review, he awarded a penalty. Kylian Mbappé confidently slotted the ball into the bottom right corner in the 70th minute.

Paraguay pushed for an equalizer, but France held on to their slim lead. Mbappé continues to rewrite World Cup history: he has now scored 11 goals in knockout matches since 2018, more than Brazil (10), England (10), Portugal (9), and Spain (4) combined in the same period. With seven goals in this tournament, he is level with Lionel Messi as the top scorers of the 2026 World Cup.

Statistics heavily favored France: 76% possession, 15 shots (5 on target) to Paraguay's 5 (1), and 568 accurate passes to 183. Paraguay did not receive a single yellow card for the first time in a World Cup match since 1998. In the quarter-finals, France will meet Morocco, a rematch of their 2022 semi-final which France won 2-0.
