France's national football team secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday, booking their place in the quarterfinals. The only goal came from a penalty converted by Kylian Mbappé in the 67th minute. It was Mbappé's 19th goal in World Cup tournaments, second only to Lionel Messi's all-time record of 20.
The match was played in extreme heat, with temperatures ranging from 37 to 39 degrees Celsius. France dominated possession in the first half with 81% but failed to create clear-cut chances. Instead, tension escalated with several scuffles. Midway through the first half, Paraguay's Matías Galarza hit Mbappé from behind with his arm, but the referee did not call a foul.
In the second half, France increased the pressure. In the 51st minute, Mbappé had a shot saved, but replays showed a handball that went unpunished. In the 67th minute, substitute Désiré Doué was tripped in the box, and after a VAR review, a penalty was awarded. Mbappé converted calmly. Before the penalty, Paraguay's Gustavo Velázquez tried to dig up the penalty spot with his boots, which the referee ignored.
Further rough play continued: Juan José Cáceres kicked Mbappé on the ground without a card. Paraguay's goalkeeper Orlando Gil made several saves but was snubbed by Mbappé after the final whistle. Paraguay finished the match without a single yellow or red card.
France will face Morocco in the quarterfinals, who beat Canada 3-0. The tournament is hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, featuring 48 teams for the first time, divided into 12 groups. The top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advance. The final is scheduled for July 19.
