The French government has been releasing strategic national oil reserves since 1 November 2026 in order to increase diesel supply and bring down prices at filling stations. The measure is intended as temporary relief for households and businesses while energy prices on international markets remain high.

What is planned

According to previously published information, France plans to release about 10 million barrels of diesel from its strategic reserves. Supply conditions are being affected by geopolitical tension. The diesel price is expected to fall by roughly 12–18 cents per litre, meaning a driver filling a 50-litre tank could save about six to nine euros.

The measure is set to last three months, until January 2027.

First results at the pump

TotalEnergies, the oil and energy company, announced on 31 October that it would cut the diesel price to 2.15 euros per litre at 705 stations in its Access network. Price changes at the company's other stations were scheduled for the following week.

Monitoring

The government wants the price reduction to reach end consumers, not just individual market players. It therefore plans to step up oversight of fuel retailers and check whether the relief is actually reflected in pump prices.

Wider impact

High fuel prices affect not only private motorists but also transport companies, farmers and other sectors closely tied to fuel consumption. The French government hopes to ease both the financial burden on households and operating costs for businesses.
