France has announced plans to deliver interceptor missiles to Ukraine, responding to a fresh wave of Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities. The announcement follows a Russian attack on Kyiv on August 20, in which a residential apartment building was hit.

Images from the scene, taken with a mobile phone, show rescuers evacuating a wounded person from the damaged building. The pictures illustrate the scale of destruction in a residential neighborhood struck during the attack.

Boosting air defense

The interceptor missiles France intends to supply are meant to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities at a time when Russia continues to regularly strike Ukrainian territory with missiles and drones. Such equipment is designed to help intercept incoming threats more effectively and protect civilian infrastructure and residential areas.

France 24 reported on the French decision and the latest strikes on August 22, 2026, publishing video footage from the scene in Kyiv. The report did not specify the exact number of missiles to be delivered or a delivery timeline.

The renewed strike on Kyiv has again drawn international attention to the protection of civilians in Ukraine as the war in the country continues.
